Founded as Royal Academy of Turku 1640. Transferred to Helsinki 1828. The first and only university in the country until 1919.
The University of Helsinki is part of the Seinäjoki University Consortium (UCS) which brings together University of Tampere, Helsinki University of the Arts - Sibelius Academy, University of Vaasa, University of Turku, the University Association of South Ostrobothnia, the Natural Resources Institute Finland and the Migration Institute of Finland. The Seinäjoki University Consortium is one of six university consortia in Finland and is coordinate by Tampere University.
