Both predecessors had a long history as higher education institutions before the merger. University of Tampere was originally founded in 1925 in Helsinki as the Civic College. It was renamed the School of Social Sciences in 1930 and relocated to Tampere in 1960. In 1966, it became the University of Tampere. Tampere University of Technology began as a branch of the Helsinki University of Technology in 1965 and gained independent university status in 1972. Note

In Finland, universities are only allowed to confer degrees that have been stipulated by the government and the Ministry of Education and Culture. This is known as the regulation of educational responsibilities. The regulations specify the level and field of degrees each university can confer. It is important to note that there are fewer fields of degrees than there are fields to study. For example, after studying computer science, one earns a degree in the field of engineering or sciences.
