Created 2006 following the merger between 'Tbilisi 'Ilia Čavčavadze' State University of Languages and Culture' (Tbilisis 'Ilia Čavčavadzis' Sakhelobis Enata da Kulturata Sakhelmtsipo Universiteti, founded 1948) and Tbilisi Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani State Pedagogical University (Tbilisis Sulkhan-Saba Orbelianis Sakhelobis Sakhelmtsipo Pedagogiuri Universiteti, founded 1935). Previously known as Ilia Čavčavadze Sakhelmtsipo Universiteti (Ilia Čavčavadze State University). Acquired present title 2010.
