Founded in 1926 as the Alberta College of Art (ACA), the college was originally part of what is now the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). Although the two campuses still border each other, ACA officially separated from SAIT in 1985 to become a stand-alone, independent, publicly funded college of art and design. In 1995 amended its name to become the Alberta College of Art and Design. In 2018, the government of Alberta announced that the college had achieved university status based on the quality of its programs.
