Founded 1457 by Archduke Albrecht of Austria and confirmed by the Emperor and the Pope. Now academically autonomous whilest financially supported by the State of Baden-Württemberg and under the jurisdiction of its Ministry of Science and Research. The status of the University is guaranteed by the Constitution of the State (Land).
